Human rights groups’ statements submitted to the United Nations Committee against
Torture prior to the body’s review of China on Friday highlight the continued
torture and death in custody of Falun Gong adherents.
In April 2007, an additional twenty one deaths of Falun Gong practitioners in China due to torture were confirmed. Among them, sixteen practitioners died between January and March in 2007 and five died in April 2007. Eight practitioners, 38 percent, were females, and thirteen, 67 percent, were seniors over fifty years old.
Zhang is one of nearly 3,000 Falun Gong practitioners whose deaths due to torture and abuse by police in China have been documented.
Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai, who is accompanying Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to visit Australia, has been sued for torture and genocide by Falun Gong practitioners in Australia. This is another lawsuit filed against Bo when he visited foreign countries, following the lawsuits against him in the US, the UK, Ireland and Russia.
